Postdoctoral Fellow

Mingze Chen is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the MIT Senseable City Lab and the founder of Nature AI Lab. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and a Master of Architecture (MArch) in Urban Design from University College London (UCL). His interdisciplinary background spans urban science, landscape architecture, environmental design, and computational research.

His research lies at the intersection of artificial intelligence, urban sensing, and human–environment interaction. By integrating geospatial analytics, computer vision, machine learning, and emerging sensing technologies, he investigates how people experience, interact with, and shape urban environments. His work particularly focuses on urban vitality, human well-being, and environmental justice, with the goal of advancing more inclusive, healthy, and sustainable cities.

At MIT, his current research explores new approaches to understanding cities through continuous, dynamic, and large-scale urban observation. He is particularly interested in leveraging mobile sensing, AI-driven analytics, and urban digital twins to capture the evolving relationships between people, urban spaces, and the built environment, translating complex urban data into actionable insights for urban planning, design, and policymaking.
