Sonny Oram

Sonny joined DUSP in July 2016, where Sonny is applying an interest racial justice, trans rights, and environmental justice through promoting urban solutions. Sonny founded the website Qwear in 2011 to expand LGBTQIA+ visual representation. Qwear gained international recognition with press including The New York TimesBuzzfeed, S Moda (Spain), The Huffington Post Live,, and Design*Sponge. In 2015 Sonny was awarded dapperQ of the year.

October 3, 2017, Sonny presented a panel at MIT along with Architect Joel Sanders and Trans Rights Lawyer Shiona Heru: "From Stud to Stalled!: Social Equity and Public Space" on a proposed shift to make multi-stall bathrooms on campus accessible to people of all genders, ages, sizes, and abilities. In March 2016, Sonny spoke at South by South West's first official queer fashion panel Queer Style: Visual Activism and Fashion’s Frontier, addressing issues of beauty, size, and gender performance in the fashion industry. Other speaking engagements include Co-ModeratorGentrification Beyond Displacement, April 18, 2017; and Moderator, Trans Health Forum at Temple Shir Tikvah, Winchester, MA , April 10, 2016.

Trained as a violist (Oberlin Conservatory), Sonny was previously Manager of the Lydian String Quartet at Brandeis University. Also a graphic designer, Sonny's poster design was featured on Archinect's "Get Lectured" Series. Sonny's posters will be on display in a solo exhibit at MIT's Rotch Library 6/15/2018 - 9/15/2018.
