The new SCC Alumni Network

The DUSP Students of Color Committee (SCC) Alum Network, with support from the Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP), hosted a 'Welcome to New York' Happy Hour and Networking event on July 26, 2018. The event succeeded in creating geographic specific, cross-generational opportunities for alumni, and boasted attendance ranging from current MIT graduate students to alumni who graduated in the early 80s.

“The Welcome to New York event was a great success,” said Katherine Mella, “It was wonderful to see generations of DUSP Alumni connect and discuss how their participation in SCC and connection to the department has shaped their professional practices and goals around building more equitable communities..’’

The SCC Alumni Network, originally established in the 1990’s, was reimagined in 2017 by four New York City-based alumnae and former SCC members - Bin Jung (MCP ‘14), Jocelyn Drummond (MCP ‘13), Katherine Mella (MCP ‘14), and Louise Yeung (MCP ‘13). They envisioned an iteration of the SCC Alumni Network that is more intentionally connected with fellow SCC and DUSP alumni of color in New York to establish a space to engage in continued dialogue about pertinent issues in planning. The SCC Alumni Network seeks to strengthen a pipeline of young planners of color, support prospective students interested in DUSP, and engage with current professional planners committed to making communities more equitable and just.

The SCC Alumni Network, since its re-launch in 2017, has hosted social events and facilitated conversations with current MIT graduate students to ensure that the alumni network can support current SCC members and be a resource for all students in DUSP.

“We are excited for SCC Alumni Network to support planners of color at all career stages. In the coming year, we are planning a variety of events around career development, reflective planning practice, and student recruitment, said Louise Yeung. “We hope to see old and new faces at our next event--a conversation on planning praxis in the fall of 2018.”

Details on the upcoming event will follow soon. To learn more, connect with the SCC Alumni Network here.
