Electricity Adoption in Rural India and Tanzania

David Hsu, with Elise Harrington (doctoral candidate), seek to further develop a game-based research strategy to elicit heterogeneous household preferences for electricity technologies and services. Understanding and describing these preferences is critical to off-grid energy business models. This extension expands their work from preferences for basic services to higher-margin products, such as TVs. They will scale and adapt their game-based strategy with existing partners in both Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and India – two of the fastest-growing regions with large concentrations of unelectrified households – to help start-up companies, policymakers, and NGOs assess and react to households’ willingness to adopt new electricity technologies and services.
