CDD Forum Spring 2012: Strategies for Shrinking Cities

The CDD Forum is a longstanding tradition in the City Design and Development Group with dual aims: to highlight emerging currents in urban design – both practice and theory- and to invite to MIT individuals who are operating at the forefront of urban design thinking.

In Spring 2012 Brent D. Ryan organized the CDD Forum to examine Strategies For Shrinking Cities- taking as its subject the shrinking city – a place whose built fabric is eroding due to population loss and economic decline - and focusing on different urban design approaches to resolving this pressing problem.

Over the course of the semester Strategies for Shrinking Cities brought different disciplinary perspectives, all arguably part of urban design, to bear on the shrinking city, including informal action, regulatory planning, landscape, photography, and of course architecture. Lectures occurred on February 21, March 5, March 19, April 30, and May 7.
