Technological innovation1 is both a significant determinant of economic growth and 
important for reducing health, safety, and environmental hazards. It may be major, involving 
radical shifts in technology, or incremental, involving adaptation of prior technologies. 
Technological innovation is different from diffusion, which is the wide-spread adoption of 
technology already developed.
