Urban Information Systems (UIS) is considered a specialization area at the doctoral level and a cross-cutting area at the Master's level. It focuses on the use of information technologies to understand the relationships underlying urban spatial structure and on the use of technology to facilitate broader and deeper participation in the planning of urban futures. Each of the four program groups has faculty with particular interests in applying computing technology. Faculty and student interests go beyond specific computing technologies or techniques in order to understand the ripple effects of computing, communications, and digital spatial information on urban and regional planning processes and on the methods for shaping and nurturing metropolitan areas. Some of this work is conducted through the Responsive City Initiative which involves faculty and students from DUSP and across the School of Architecture and Planning who are using digital technology to shape urban life:
- In the world’s cities, where digital systems are transforming patterns of activity and physical form in regions, urban environments, and our personal lives.
- In the community, where new technologies can help citizens to envision alternative futures and expand citizen participation in the planning process.
- In the university, where these same technologies are being harnessed to make urban life more intelligible to scholars and policy makers.
Drawing on MIT’s unique strengths, the Responsive City Initiative brings together faculty and students from design, information systems, community development, and environment to create new ways of learning and to build multi-discipline teams to explore opportunities for research and development created by the expanding intersection of ICT and the city. Our group meets regularly at the Responsive City lunch to exchange ideas from ongoing projects and explore and debate the digital revolution now underway across cities and city planning.
