DUSP's Professor Lawrence Vale receives a 2017 Frank E. Perkins Award for Excellence in Graduate Advising

Lawrence Vale, Ford Professor of Urban Design and Planning, who has been a member of the MIT faculty for over 28 years and has received many awards for teaching and advising, was named one of the 2017 Frank E. Perkins recipient for excellence in graduate advising.

Despite having eleven current doctoral advisees, Vale works closely and attentively with each student to mentor and give them opportunities to succeed at MIT and beyond. Students, both current and alumni, wrote in to voice their thanks for Vale's consistent care and mentorship.

The Frank E. Perkins award is named in memory of Professor Perkins who was an expert in the myriad facets of water resources engineering. While Perkins served as the dean of the School of Engineering, he inited a program aimed to support new faculty members and teaching assistants to develop their skills, pedagogy, and theory necessary for effective teaching.
