MIT-UTM Malaysia Sustainable Cities Program

This five year project is supported by the Malaysia government in collaboration with the Universiti of Teknologi of Malaysia (UTM).  Five faculty members from DUSPMIT and five from UTM will select ten Visiting Scholars each year for five years from universities in G-77, developing countries.  The Visiting Scholars will receive support to spend half a year at UTM studying topics related to sustainable city development in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Johor Bahru, and Georgetown, with the assistance of partnering institutions and regional development agencies.  After their residency in Malaysia, the scholars will spend the spring semester at MIT transforming their research findings into an online, digital and video-based library of teaching materials.  Their work -- in the form of video documentation, traditional and digital teaching materials, and scholarly papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals-- will be distributed by MIT and available to a global audience.

As part of the MIT-UTM Malaysia Sustainable Cities Program, each year an IAP and Spring Practicum will enable DUSPMIT students to travel to UTM to study sustainable city development in Malaysia with the Visiting Scholars.  Professor Lawrence Susskind is the leader of the MIT team, located in the Community Innovator's Lab (CoLab).
