The 2012 Tianjin Studio is the latest in a series of studios on sustainable residential development in China. Sustainability is defined in this studio as a balance of the “three E’s”: environment, economy, and equity, reached through resource efficiency, demographic inclusiveness, accessible community facilities, and mobility. The studio set out to explore ways in which future projects of the sponsor, Vanke China, could promote sustainability and to enhance its role in supporting Tianjin's growth. Students re-imagined the existing site of Donglihu, strategically located on one of the main development corridors connecting the city center of Tianjin with its new business core in the Binhai port area: The three alternative plans are intended to make clear the process of planning through the preliminary guidelines formulated.
