Case Study Team Explores Climate Change Effects in South Florida

Danya Sherman, case study initiative manager for the STL Lab, and her team traveled to south Florida to film an MIT Case Study that explores planning in the face of severe weather impacts resulting from climate change. Former DUSP lecturer Fadi Masoud, now assistant professor of landscape architecture and urbanism in the Daniels Faculty at the University of Toronto, and Miho Mazaareuw, director of the Urban Risk Lab at MIT and associate professor in the Department of Architecture, are working with the case study team, which includes creative director and designer Jeff Soyk and video producer and editor Paige Mazurek.

The STL Lab is developing an accessible online multimedia educational platform, and this project is one of the the first cases to raise awareness about the impacts of climate change on urbanism and development.

"Resiliency planning means that we must fight water with water. Our standards need to evolve to proactively embed new paradigms and metrics in the planning and design of any project," said Dr. Jennifer Jurado, Broward County's chief climate resilience officer and director of the Environmental Planning and Community Resilience Division.
